William Paterson papers, [ca. 1833-1897].

This collection contains the papers belonging to William Paterson (1817-1899), covering the years circa 1833 to 1897. Included are verse, essays, speeches, and compositions that he wrote as an undergraduate at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Additionally, the papers contain an incomplete manuscript biography of his grandfather, William Paterson (1745-1806). Also included are transcripts of letters written by Paterson's famous grandfather, including one addressed to Aaron Burr (1756-1836). The papers also consist of drafts of poems written by Paterson, along with his brother, Stephen Van Rensselaer Paterson, which were published under the title Poems of Twin Graduates of the College of New Jersey (Newark, 1882), and three writing notebooks.

William Paterson, the grandson of the Hon. William Paterson (1745-1806), was born in 1817. Paterson matriculated at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), and graduated from the school in 1835. In 1838, he was admitted to the New Jersey state bar.
